Liner
notes provides information about new songs or CDs from artists who may be signed
to a record company, recorded on an independent label, or recorded in a home
recording studio. The purpose of liner notes is to provide a place where musicians
can gain some exposure for their work - where you can read about and listen
to their music.
Many publications have Music Reviews' - Liner Notes is not a music review in that it does not criticize any of the musicians or their work. I have never liked reviews of art - such as reviews of paintings, plays, movies, or music. I feel the experience of music or art is subjective - we each have our own likes/dislikes, preferences and tastes. I would rather hear the band or go to the movie myself and make my own judgement. Now - I could use some information to help me decide which band to go see or CD to buy such as what type of music genre, who the musicians are on the recording, etc.
This is what Liner Notes will provide - a link to the musicians' website when available, interesting items from their press release or email to me, and a little something about why I chose a particular song(s) to put on the jukebox.
I believe that all music has value. I have heard discussions about an over saturation of people creating music. The idea is that the consumer is overwhelmed with choices and that the music business is not able to devote as much time and money to any one artist - thereby causing future Elvis Presleys to go unheard of by the masses. My opinion on these arguments is that no culture can make too much art - there will never be too many books, or too many sculptures, or too many poems, or too many songs. There used to be cultures where everyone was raised in homes where singing and playing a musical instrument were part of the fabric of everyday life. Art is the reflection of a culture's soul - art expresses the experiences and sentiments of a people. Art is not something to limit either by amount produced or by the number of persons producing it.
I hope you'll discover someone new or be influenced or inspired by listening to some of the selections by the musicians of Liner Notes.
